Kazakhstan: What is Mas-wrestling?

We’re thrilled to share some incredible news! Our Wrestling for Peace Ambassadors have been extended a prestigious invitation to be special guests at the upcoming World Nomad Games in Astana, Kazakhstan, September 8-14, 2024. In this incredible gathering of peoples and nations, with 20 sports represented, we will be diving headfirst into the growing international sport of Mas-wrestling. But what exactly is Mas-wrestling? Allow us to shed some light on this captivating competition.

Mas-wrestling, originating from nomadic nations throughout Asia, is a dynamic and traditional ethnosport that emphasizes strength, agility, and technique. At its core, Mas-wrestling is a gripping contest where opponents sit facing each other with their feet braced against a wooden board, placing a stick (known as a Mas) between them. The objective? To wrestle the stick from your opponent’s grasp or pull them over the board. Sounds intense, right?

This unique sport has captured the hearts of athletes and spectators alike, with its blend of physical prowess and strategic maneuvering. And now, Wrestling for Peace has the incredible opportunity to be immersed in the electrifying atmosphere of Mas-wrestling at the World Nomad Games. Our invitation comes directly from Pavel Fittisov, Vice President and esteemed international referee for Mas-wrestling in Kazakhstan. His passion for the sport and dedication to promoting peace through athletic competition make this invitation all the more special.

As we embark on this thrilling journey to Kazakhstan’s capital city, we are stepping into a world where sport transcends cultural boundaries and fosters connections that span countries and continents. Get ready to witness the power of sport in action as Wrestling for Peace takes on Mas-wrestling at the World Nomad Games in Kazakhstan.
