Afghanistan: Hooman’s Hope

In the wake of a devastating suicide bombing on September 3, 2018, the Maiwand Wrestling Club in Kabul, Afghanistan, was left in ruin, claiming 26 lives, 16 of whom were young wrestlers, and wounding another 91 people, including members of the coaching staff. This senseless act left behind a host of shattered dreams.

The Maiwand Wrestling Club was not just a gym; it was a sanctuary where young Afghans found solace and purpose amidst the turmoil of their surroundings. These individuals, unlike the perpetrator of the attack, sought to channel their energy into positive endeavors, using wrestling to better their lives and inspire others.

When Hooman Tavakolian, a Wrestling for Peace Ambassador and Director of Hoomanities, a not-for-profit service organization, heard about the deadly attack, he was determined to help restore and rebuild, not just their wrestling gym, but their hope. As an Ambassador, Hooman embodies the spirit of peace through his passion for people and wrestling. He could not stand by and allow this story to be forgotten.

Hooman began a GoFundMe campaign, envisioning a facility that not only honors the memory of those lost but also provides a nurturing environment for future generations of wrestlers to thrive. “If you want to make the world a better place, it’s better to develop young kids than try to fix men,” he said.

Through the generosity of many individuals and organizations, including Penn State, Iowa, Nike, Cliff Keen and Adidas, and the tireless work of Tavakolian, tragedy was turned into triumph, ensuring the dreams of those who perished in this futile act will live on.
